In May 2024, Amazon 1863 Project Secretary, Karyn Bugeja was successful in receiving a grant to study for five days at the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) in Sydney. This intensive Administrator’s Course held at the museum in November 2024 covered all aspects of a maritime museum. Each day of the ANMM course was themed and included a fleet tour, museum tour and lectures from directors, curators, maritime archaeologists, digital technologists, conservators, programming experts and collection managers. There were also discussions on storytelling, people, audiences, members, volunteers and a sail on Sydney Harbour aboard the Duyfken. The insights gained into all aspects of maritime museum operations has been extremely valuable to our group. From collection management to creative exhibitions, engaging techniques, funding strategies, attracting new audiences, creating programs, to the challenges of protecting and maintaining historic vessels and realising their interpretation potential. This internship has been a most worthwhile experience, a brilliant education model, and an absolute bonus for the Amazon 1863 Project assisting the committee in their future plans.
